It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag....

A democracy cannot survive as a permanent form of government. It can last only until its citizens discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority (who vote) will vote for those candidates promising the greatest benefits from the public purse, with the result that a democracy will always collapse from loose fiscal policies, always followed by a dictatorship.---Lord Thomas MacCauley
He mnight not be in the race for President any more, but he is again posting at Townhall.
It is nice to see himposting again, and I still wish he wouldn't have gotten out ofthe race.
....
Our nation has some serious issues to work through for today … and for the next generation. Now isn’t the time for conservatives to be looking for a tailored message or a politically expedient route to victory if the end result is going to be the inevitable slide toward the liberalization and secularization of America, and the growth of government and loss of freedom that inevitably ensues. For us conservatives it must be about principles and policies that are grounded in freedom, free markets and the rule of law. That’s what I’ve been talking and writing about for the past few years, and that’s what I want to talk write about here on Townhall and in the new Townhall Magazine. --Fred Thompson
Fred Thompson has dropped out oftherace for the Republican nominee for President. I wish him luck in what ever he does and thank him for joining in the fight fr the conservative cause. He will be missed in the contest for the Republicans.
For Immediate Release
Statement from Sen. Fred Thompson
McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:
"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."
That is what Rick Moran calls Fred on The American Thinker today. I tend to agree with him on all points. The voters are always asking the candidates to say specifics in their answers, but it seems that if you can not say those specifics in 30 seconds or less, the people go off and watch the next install ment of American Idol or Survivor. Bur during the New Hamspire debatdes, Fred came alive and has gained much more support than he did in the few months before. As Rush said," when you talk like a conservative, the people will listen more" Not the exact quote, but you get the idea. When we have a Republican candidate that talks and acts like a conservaiteve they winn in landslides, just look at Reagan's landlside victories. i do think that our country is a littel to the right of center and has been going farther right since the Reagan Revolution. But it seems that the Republican Party is going in the opposite direction. Don't get me wrong,I love what Presidnet Bush has done, especially with the War on Terror, but our Party has veered far too much to the Left. When we have people like Huckabe, Romney, and McCain as the supposed front runners, I think the Republican Party is in trouble. They will have no chance against the well-oiled Democratic machines. I will happily vote for them, but it will have a bad taste in my mouth when I do. Guiliani I can live with, he ismore conservative than the rest except Fred and Duncan Hunter, the only real qualms I would have with him is on abortion, but most of his stances on abrtion were derived from the law, as a lawyer should do. And also the President has no real say in Abortion.
I think Rick Moran nals it on the head with this article:
Fred Thompson is not the most inspiring speaker in the GOP race for President. Nor is he the best looking or the smoothest talking among the candidates running. He doesn't have Mitt Romney's hair or Mike Huckabee's glibness. He isn't as aggressively positive as Rudy Giuliani. And while his personal story is compelling, it can't compete with John McCain's inspirational journey from POW to the gates of the White House.
But Fred Thompson is perhaps the most substantative candidate to run for President in many years. He has taken the time to think about what should be the relationship between the government and the governed. He has framed his thoughts within the context of a set of bedrock conservative principles that animates his thinking and generates sound ideas about where America should be headed.
There is a heft to Thompson, a seriousness of purpose that none of the other candidates can match. It is most pronounced during the debates where Thompson's answers to questions are more subtle and nuanced than those of his rivals. His sometimes laconic style zings his opponents with brutal accuracy. Often, the candidate will answer a question by stating "Yep" or "Nope" and pause a few seconds to gather his thoughts. What follows is almost always coherent and is informed by years of experience in government.
His now famous moment during the Des Moines Register debate where he refused to raise his hand like a schoolboy when the moderator asked who believed in global warming was a metaphor for the entire Thompson campaign; keeping the Mickey Mouse to a minimum while trying to be as substantative as possible with the voters. In short, Thompson is running the campaign his way and not in a manner dictated by any previous candidate's success or any criticism that comes his way from media pundits.--The American Thinker
Melanie Mrgan of MoveAmericaForward.org has endorsed Fred on the eve of the South Carolina primary. She is one of the greatest advocates for the troops here in the USA and this ia a pretty big endorsement for Fred.
The complete conservative for president Posted: January 18, 2008 1:00 a.m. Eastern
Tomorrow, voters in South Carolina will have the chance to roil the political waters in the Republican presidential primary campaign by voting for former Sen. Fred Thompson for president.
Much of the Republican base is uncertain about which of the GOP candidates best represents their values. Some are even whispering that the Republican convention in Minneapolis might turn into a brokered convention because of the divisions in the party that have caused various factions of the GOP to back different presidential candidates. I'm not sure it will go that far, but frankly, I don't know – and neither does anyone else pontificating on radio, TV or in print.
For the sake of this nation, I'm hoping that on Saturday the people of the Palmetto State punch the ballot for Thompson (no hanging chads, please).
Folks, it comes down to this basic premise:
The former Tennessee senator represents the best hope not just for Republicans and conservatives, but, most importantly, the best hope for America.
As a conservative Republican, I've endured more than my fair share of elections where I was told to hold my nose and vote for the lesser of evils.
Both are worthy causes. So please help Fred and the Cancer Society.
Flopping Aces has another updated list of Marble Head Regiment
And here is the PJ Media Poll as of 1/16/08. I like that the conservatives are at the top.
Also I will leave this poll up here until Super Duper Tuesday.

10 at 10 for America!
Tonight at 10pm EST we Fred Heads are holding a nation wide fundraising event for Fred Thsompson to get his campaign over the Million $ mark. So tonight at 10pm I ask you to donate $10 for Fred Thompson at www.fred08.com
Don't do it for me, don't do it for Fred, DO IT FOR AMERICA!
Since the truck looks a little stuck at this moment, AND I was unable to make phone calls last night due to client commitments, AND people have told me that I should stop complaigning and start doing, AND Fred really needs to win S.C. AND the U.S. really needs Fred to win, I AM GOING TO ISSUE A CHALLENGE…
For any person who donates $50 or more to Fred’s campaign by 12pm est tonight, I will donate $1. I will do this up to 1,300 people which will then put me at my $2,300 limit and will put Fred at least half way to the $540,000 based on where he is now.
These last moments, before the clock runs out, could make or break the campaign. We need to get behind Fredin order to get him a win and get him the exposure he needs to break out into the spotlight. Fred will be doing his part at the debate this evening. We need to do our part right now. Don’t wait any longer.
To issue this challenge really puts a strain on my budget. My wife would rather I didn’t do it. We will have to really sacrifice in order to afford it, but I know that putting forth the support now is worth the sacrifice. Please make the sacrifice with me. If no one joins with me then my sacrifice will be in vain, but more importantly, Fred’s sacrifice will be in vain as well. He is fighting to make this country a better place, please give him the means necessary.
It is that time again. Itr is time to get down to the Nitty Gritty and place your bets on where you want the Republican Party to go towards. Do we want it to go back to its roots or do we want a leftward turn in the party. It is up to you. I have always wanted the Party to go back to fiscal restraint, strong military, and a less intrusive government. If you want to get back to the Republican Party of Reagan and the Contract with America, Fred Thompson is your man. If you want more of the same "compassionate conservatism" of Pressident Bush, then go for McCain, Romney, or Guiliani. Even thog I like allof these candidates better than amy o the Socialists that the Democratic Party has put on display, we need a conservative, not a soft on illegal immigration conservative, or a Populist like Huckabe.
I am not going to put up the truck this time, but we are very close to the $540,000 Fred needs to get his message on the airwaves in South Carolina.
Also go over to Flopping Aces to check out the latest list of endoresements for Fred
So go to Fred08 and check it out and if you can give a little to get the conservative message out.
Great post on Scrappleface citing Thompson about wimpy reporters.
Thompson: Political Reporters Lack 'Fire in the Belly'
Posted By Scott Ott On January 2, 2008 @ 9:41 pm In Media/Journalism, Politics
(2008-01-02) — Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson today questioned whether political reporters covering the race for the White House have enough ambition for the job.
“Most of these journalists seem to lack what you might call fire in the belly,” said the former Tennessee senator. “When’s the last time you read an in-depth story about what the presidential hopefuls actually believe, or have accomplished? How often have you seen a reporter place a candidate’s views in the context of the Constitution, the sweep of American history, the intricacies of global geopolitics, economic theory or even basic political philosophy?”
Mr. Thompson said most reporting on the race fits one of three categories: 1) Results of the latest opinion poll. 2) Embarrassing gaffes and nasty remarks. 3) Reaction to one of the above.
“I’m not sure if it’s laziness, lack of ambition, or just apathy,” said Mr. Thompson, “But the American people need to know that the reporters whom they entrust with this solemn responsibility have a burning desire to fulfill the obligations of the Fourth Estate. That means you need to hustle, do your homework, ask tough questions about significant issues, put quotations in context, filter out your own natural bias, and place more value on accuracy than on speed, more on integrity than on your own petty celebrity.”
After making the remarks at a news conference, the candidate, who’s running third or fourth among Republicans in most polls, refused to answer reporters’ questions about his reaction to Mike Huckabee’s attacks on Mitt Romney.
It looks like we are on are way to getting Fred's Truck filled up with donations, but we still ned some more friends for Fred.
We had fantastic events in Greenville, Lexington, Camden and Sumter. Fred was greeted by enthusiastic crowds at each stop and took his message directly to hundreds of voters. Today he will be in Florence, Conway, and Myrtle Beach.
He's out there working hard and doing what he does best; talking directly to the people who will determine the outcome of the primary in just 10 days. Check out this footage of yesterday's events.
South Carolina has been an important component of our strategy since this race began, and we have been very focused on laying the groundwork for victory down there for a long time. Our team in the state is second to none and we have an outstanding organization of support throughout the state.
Fred is energized and focused. He's out there pounding the pavement, but he needs your help.
We are very close to meeting our goal for the Red Truck Challenge, help us get there with your contribution today! Forward on Fred's message to your friends and encourage them to join on as Friends of Fred. Log on to our 'Phone for Fred' program and help us reach voters across the state.
Thanks for all you have done and continue to do. We are looking forward to another tremendous bus tour and a victory on January 19th.
Sincerely,
William B. Lacy Campaign Manager
Thanks to Bright & Early Better known to us as “The Marblehead Regiment,” these were the hard cases of the American army – a group of swaggering, swearing, spitting fishermen and common seamen led by a remarkable Brigadier by the name of John Glover. Under the guns of the British on Long Island, they ferried 10,000 men and horses across the East River in one night and part of a morning (aided by a heavy fog that obscured the retreat from prying British eyes).
[…]
But that Christmas night in 1776, they truly earned their spurs as they tirelessly rowed time and again across the river and back again, making their way through the ice choked waters in the worst conditions imaginable. Rain mixed with sleet and ice later turning to snow, the waves on the Delaware crashing over the bow covering the rowers with a sheet of clinging ice, the gunwales sometimes perilously close to tipping into the water and capsizing the boats – a certain death in a matter of minutes given the temperature of the water.
The fate of American independence rested with those 400 hardy souls who manned the oars that blustery night. And herein lies the reason for my little historical digression and an illustration of why, if you support Fred Thompson for President, this is the time to get the hell off the sidelines and start rowing the damn boat.
So if you want to help Fred go and join the Marbleheads. Also give a donation or get others to join Friends of Fred.
You can give a contribution here or on my sidebar with Slatecard
We have almost half of the amount Fred needs with 6 days left to go. We are a little short maybe in the Friends of Ref but we are gaining on that also. Go to the bottom to donate to Fred and invite friends to join Friends of Fred.
If you are wanting a true conservative in the White House next year please go and give a little to Fred. It is the bsginning of a long Primary Season and Fred is not out oif it by a long shot. It is a uphill battle with Politico and the MSM ignoring Fred, but we can help bring his messge of OCnservatie values across America and elect a true conservative to the White House.
Take a look at the front page
and youâll see the red pickup truck. Fred needs $540,000 for media in
South Carolina. You were so generous before when Fred needed money to
run ads in Iowa. We need that same kind of support again.
This is a wide open race. In Iowa Fred showed there was a hunger for
clear conservative leadership. Republicans want someone who will keep
the Reagan coalition together. Fred has the conservative ideas, the
leadership, and the experience to do that.
Like he did in Iowa Fred will be traveling South Carolina talking
directly to the people telling them the truth. But heâll need
commercials on TV to support him. $540,000 will do that.
We added an additional challenge. We want 50,000 new Friends of
Fred. We want more people to be a part of our movement. Now, you have
two ways to help Fred: get your friends and neighbors to become Friends of Fred or donate to Fredâs conservative cause.
Spread the word about both our challenges. Send e-mails, talk them
up on blogs, and use social networks like Facebook to get the word out.
In Iowa Fred knew you would come through for him; he knows you will do
it again.
UPDATE: Wow. Weâre already over $100,000. Thatâs an amazing start. Whatever youâre doing keep it up.

This is the endorsement of Russ who was a contributor at Blonde Sagacity at his county cucus in Iowa. ik donl't think I could say it better than he did.
Hello, my name is Russ [from Winterset], and I’ve come here tonight to vote for Fred Thompson. Here is why I think Fred Thompson is the best candidate for President.
Fred Thompson has demonstrated consistent conservative principles. He was a conservative yesterday, he’s a conservative today, and, God willing, he’ll be a conservative President next January. He has laid out more specific issue and policy stances than all the other Republican candidates combined. He has released the most rational immigration plan out there, with an emphasis on border enforcement first, a plan to increase our armed forces to a “million man army”, a detailed plan to save social security, and a comprehensive reform of our tax structure.
Fred Thompson believes that America deserves a strong leader who believes in the greatness of our country. He’ll look out for America’s interests, and I think he’s the best man to have facing down our enemies. And mark my words; Fred Thompson walks the walk like he talks the talk.
Fred Thompson has demonstrated a consistent pro-life record. He realizes that there’s no way that a president from either party is going to get 66 Senators and 37 State Legislatures to support ANY Constitutional Amendment at this time. Having a well meaning Constitutional Amendment as your ONLY option is tantamount to sitting on your hands & doing nothing; but Fred Thompson’s plan to appoint justices who believe in the principles of our founding fathers will return power to the states, where public opinion can still be heard over the sound of interest groups opening their checkbooks. The National Right to Life Committee and seven of their state chapters believe in Fred Thompson, and they’ve given him their endorsement.
Fred Thompson stands for what Republicans believe in: lower taxes, limited government, the defense of the unborn, a secure border, the right to keep & bear arms, an immigration policy that respects the rule of law, and an unwavering commitment to the national security of the United States of America. At every point of his life, Fred Thompson has risen to the challenge and answered America’s call. He’s ready to answer the call to service again, and he can win in November against the Democratic nominee. With your help, he can win tonight in Iowa. Thank you for coming out tonight to caucus, and I’ll be available later to answer any questions you might have."
With Fred getting a 3rd place finish in Iowa, he beat some of the expectations of the Pundits and MSM. But he will need our help again to go on and take his message of conservative values to the rest of the country. I will not lie, I think he is going to have an uphill climb, because he gets no coverage in the MSM and even Fox News (the Supposed Right WIng News) downplays anything he does. So with our help and all the help of the Fred Head Marbleheads, we can show the MSM and all the pundits that what the Republicans need is a true conservative.
Here is Fred's Message to me and all the Fred Heads out there:
Dear Stix,
Yesterday was an amazing day! We got a ticket to the next dance!
We beat expectations and the "experts" and finished third.
I started on the Iowa bus tour nearly three weeks ago. We barnstormed through more than 50 cities and towns, covering many miles. I visited town squares, diners, fire stations, local newspapers and more.
I took my message directly to the people and they responded...and that's why we are going on to win this election. After two national debates in New Hampshire over the weekend we will be heading to South Carolina.
But I will be honest. I must have your help.
The resources that we invested there were well spent, but have left the cupboard a little bare. We had a strong showing but we've got some more ground to cover.
My old pickup has driven me to victory twice in Tennessee and with the fill-up you provided last week, it drove my message home to the voters of Iowa.
The day after Christmas I challenged you to fund my media campaign. Once again the media scoffed at what we were trying to accomplish--they said Americans don't give to campaigns the week after Christmas. It's another one of those rules that I don't care too much for.
Well, guess what?
Over those next three days, 4,465 Americans responded to the challenge, and invested in our consistent conservative message. The total we raised was $297,238!
Once again, we challenged the conventional wisdom and the so called experts, and proved them wrong.
Now I need your help again. I'm in this race for the long haul and I want to win.
The next target in our sights is South Carolina. It has always been critical to our plan for victory.
Like in Iowa, we have a strong organization there. And again, I will be back on the bus, visiting key cities and towns, talking directly to the people.
Television advertising is critical to our success. I need your help to make sure that we have the resources to capitalize on our momentum and take our message to the airwaves.
Once again, I'm calling on my friends.
As an official online "Friend of Fred" here's what I need you to do:
Forward this message along with a personal appeal of your own to 10 friends. Encourage them to sign up online and become a friend as well.
Beginning now, for the next 7 days, we need to nearly double our last challenge.
I need your help to increase our budget by $539,492.
I also need your help adding to our tremendous online community. I want to get as many people on board to hear the news of this campaign directly from me, and not through the filter of the main stream media. I want to increase our Friends by 50,000.
When we hit that goal, we will be able to reach the voters that we need...our conservative message will get out.
Every penny will go to South Carolina media. Every penny will move us one step closer to victory.
We did it before. And today we have the momentum. Let's do it again.
I've got to have your support to make it happen. We're a team.
If you are like me, you are excited about the upcoming caucuses while at the same time, can’t wait to get them over with. I have had 16 messages from candidates, supporters of candidates, supporters of specific party platforms, etc. just in the last 2 days. I won’t miss those when they are gone.
I am sending this message on my own without the request or assistance of anyone. It contains my opinions, so if there is something factually incorrect, you can blame me. Since your email address is posted on the Iowa GOP web site, I am presuming that you will not consider this spam and will receive it in the spirit in which it is sent.
As a County Central Committee Chairperson, I have withheld from endorsing any particular candidate throughout the process and have worked hard to bring as many candidates to Carroll County as I could. As head of my county’s party, however, I do believe fellow Republicans in this area are now looking to me for guidance in the upcoming caucuses and it is time to break my silence.
I consider myself a true conservative and, as such, am looking for a true conservative leader. While the press tells the world that the end of the Republican Party is near because we are not liberal enough, I say the end may be near because our politicians are not conservative enough. The porosity of our border, the total disregard for our sovereignty and upholding the law on top of spending like drunken sailors are liberal agendas which our politicians have adopted so as not to upset anyone.
Well, it upsets me and come Thursday evening, I’m taking steps towards doing something about it. I have had the fortune of being able to talk face to face with many of our Republican presidential candidates and have had the opportunity to listen, in person, to all of them.
To cut to the chase, I am supporting Fred Thompson at the Caucuses and hope you will too. If you have not heard or spoken to the man in person, you have missed out. When asked questions, he gives direct answers and then explains his position. The Dems can not say that this man lacks gravitas. Read his positions regarding your favorite topics on fred08.com and I think you will agree that Fred is the conservative voice we are looking for. His message is consistent and strongly conservative; 100% pro-life voting record, opposes gay marriage, opposes judges legislating from the bench, supports border enforcement, is the only one talking about Social Security reform, wants to reform and simplify our tax structure, cut wasteful spending and enhance our military strength. Fred believes in individual liberty and personal responsibility, free markets, limited government, federalism, protecting our country, traditional American values and the Rule of Law. If you are a conservative, what is there not to agree with?
Fred recently earned the endorsement of Iowa’s 5th District Congressman, Steve King. If you know Steve King as I do, you know that he is a true Conservative. He has a 97% rating from the American Conservative Union. Fred has also received the endorsement of Bill Salier, much of Team Tancredo, the Ottumwa Courier, the National Right to Life, and a list that is growing strong and fast. For whatever it’s worth, add me to that list.
The media puts Fred in 3rd or 4th place in the Iowa Caucuses. Fortunately, the media doesn’t get to vote at Caucuses. If you have already endorsed a candidate, I ask that you take one more opportunity to review Fred’s web site, watch his message to Iowa voters and read through his positions on relevant topics. We need a true conservative to bring this country back and keep it out of the hands of Clinton, Obama, Edwards or whichever tax and spend liberal they end up with. We need Fred Thompson.
I hope you will join me in speaking up at Caucus night for Fred Thompson. If you agree that we need a true conservative in the White House, please feel free to forward this note to fellow Caucus goers and let’s get Fred the win he needs in Iowa to boost him to the next level.
Leave it to someone across the pond (in this case, Paul Marks at Samizdata), to identify Fred Thompson's biggest obstacle in this election:
Fred Thompson is in the middle of a 40 town Iowa tour - so he is hardly lazy. And he does go on television shows - thus dealing with critics, such as myself, who attacked him for not going on enough shows. But what sort of person would enjoy all this?
A lunatic. Someone who was interested in office for its own sake - not as a means to reduce the size and scope of government.
What the media, including Fox News (the only non-leftist news station and, therefore, of vital importance in the Republican nomination process), are saying is that Fred Thompson is too sane to be President. It is not enough to produce detailed policies for dealing with the entitlement program Welfare State (a cancer that is destroying the United States and the rest of the Western World), or producing a new optional flat tax (individuals could continue to use the existing system if they wished to) to deal with the nightmare of complexity that the income tax has become.
It is not even enough to have a long record of service, going back to Watergate and taking down a corrupt Governor of Tennessee in the 1970's. And having one of the most Conservative voting records in the United States Senate - before leaving it in disgust at how the system did not allow real reform.
No - someone has to enjoy the prospect for office for its own sake, not to reduce the size and scope of government and restore a Federal Republic. One must enjoy the whole process of politics - i.e. be crazy. Or one must pretend to enjoy it - i.e. be a liar.
And then people complain that politicians are either crazy or corrupt. When they shoo away anyone who comes along who is neither crazy or corrupt.
Thompson is running the kind of campaign — substantive, policy-laden, not based on gimmicks or sound-bites — that pundits and journalists say they want, but he's getting no credit for it from the people who claim that's what they want. It's like in Tootsie when Dustin Hoffman tries doing the things he's heard women say they want from men, only to discover that they don't really want those things at all.
I made some similar points in my NRODT essay explaining my support for Thompson. In short, some say Thompson doesn't want to be President badly enough. At a time when Presidential wannabes plot their moves years (if not decades) in advance, that should be a feature, not a bug.

Update at the bottom****
Update II at the Bottom
Well it is getting very close to the day the first caucus begins and Fred Thompson needs our help. We need to help him get out his message out and show that he is the true conservative in the Republican race for President on the United States.
Rick Moran at RightWing NutHouse had a great idea that all the bloggers out there for Thompson start a fund drive for the next 2 days.
Here is the email he sent out to fellow bloggers that were on Flopping Aces list of Fredhead bloggers.
Dear Friends,
I am writing to ask for your help.
All of us know the long odds faced by Fred Thompson in his efforts to win the GOP nomination for president. I’m sure you are all aware that Fred has undertaken pretty much of a do or die bus tour of Iowa in order to finish strongly in the Caucuses on January 3.
Many of you have already taken steps to support the Thompson campaign in a tangible way by placing fundraising widgets on your sidebar and writing about the campaign. In this way, each of us alone has done whatever we can to support Fred in his efforts.
But at this, the 11th hour of the campaign in Iowa, I think it would be a very effective fundraising tool if as many of us as possible were to participate in an old-fashioned Blogburst, writing a post asking readers to donate to the campaign while embedding a fundraising widget in the post for convenience.
I propose Thursday, December 27 for the Blogburst. If you have an email list, I would urge you to ask your subscribers to donate. If you know of other bloggers who support Fred, please forward this email and ask them to participate as well.
Not expecting a “money bomb” but even a few tens of thousands of dollars would help, I’m sure. Given the number of readers represented in the blogs listed here (where I got all of your email addresses) and your cooperation, I feel confident we can give a real shot in the arm to the campaign.
I don’t think any of us believe that our endorsement of Thompson alone means that much in the long run. But working together, uniting for one day and speaking with one voice, I think we could make a significant impact on Fred’s chances in Iowa. After all, when the candidate you support rolls the dice as Fred has, the least we can do is back his play to the best of our ability.
